    What is a telematics system?

    Telematics connects the telecommunications with computer science. Telematics systems record activities automatically and depict them on the pc screen. The information is transmitted between computers via data telecommunication. Worldwide active vehicles and people are depicted. Hereby tedious manual and extensive handwritten recordings are no longer required. Seamless evidence of exact activities, such as salt spreading, snow ploughing, etc.

    What does GPS mean?

    The GPS (Global Positioning System) satellite system was originally installed by the Ministry of Defence in the USA. The intention was to achieve a higher accuracy of the guidance for military purposes. The US Congress approved the funding for the installation only under the condition that the GPS system is also provided for civil utilisation.

    For this reason the GPS satellites send two different signals: an encrypted very precise signal for the NATO (P) and an uncoded (L1). The civil signal (L1) can be received and utilised via GPS receiver virtually by everyone at every time, worldwide and free of licensing costs (e.g. for vehicle navigation).

    The GPS system is subject to continuous improvement. Changes may have the consequence that the accuracy and/or the performance of the GPS receiver is influenced. The USA have the sole responsibility for the accuracy and maintenance of the GPS system.

    The attainable accuracy for the civil signal lies today at approximately 10 metres. Before the 2nd of May, the signal was artificially distorted (SA, selected availability). Hereby the accuracy of the signal was limited to 100m. It is still possible even today that in crisis areas the signal is regionally artificially distorted.

    At the moment there are around 30 satellites (24 productive satellites, plus correctional and reserve satellites) on six orbits. Above the horizon can stand up to 12 satellites. The MOBIDAT GPS receivers can receive up to 12 satellites simultaneously. Provided that there is visual contact and the position can be calculated exactly. This always happens then, when a MOBIDAT unit has free skies above. Often the position can be calculated in halls with wooden or plastic roofs. Thick clouds or foliage may interfere with the GPS reception. The time to the first correct positioning (time to first fix, TTFF) is considerably decreased by the so called Assisted GPS Function. With a clear view to the skies, the TTFF can be reduced down to a few seconds. (see also http://www.nasa.gov)

    What does Galileo mean?

    With Galileo a separate European civil navigation system is coming into being, which will be developed for world-wide utilisation. Galileo is an independent, highly accurate system for localisation and time measurement – world-wide and at any time. For Galileo the following five services are planned for different applications:

    • Open Service (OS): The Open Service allows the determination of one's own position. Additionally it provides the exact time, so that the speed of movement can be calculated. The Open Service shall be provided uncoded and free of charge.

    • Commercial Service (CS): The Commercial Service is more precise in the localisation than the Open Service, due to higher transmission rates because of additional transmission frequencies. For this reason it is encoded and subject to charge.

    • Public Regulated Service (PRS): The Public Regulated Service shall assist state institutions such as Police, Border Patrol, Customs and security entities with the fulfilment of their sovereign duties. The signal is encoded, especially stable and secured against disturbances and deceptions.

    • Search and Rescue (SAR): Most of the emergency beacons are operated via the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite system. With Galileo these SAR functions will be improved, because the position of the emergency beacons is recognised in real-time and with a precision of a few metres. Also a feedback to the emergency call station/victim is to be developed.

    • Safety of Life (SoL): This encoded service is design for user groups, for who the guaranteed accuracy of the position and time determination is important. This concerns particularly the traffic authorities (aviation, shipping, railways).

    Galileo services can be used in aviation for different navigation applications, among others in air traffic control, in shipping for safe navigation with electronic nautical maps, in railways for train guidance and monitoring systems, in road traffic for navigation, with driver assistance systems, with the automatic electronic emergency call (eCall) or with overlapping transport carriers for the surveillance of dangerous goods transportation and goods tracking.

    However also in geodesy, in agriculture and fishing, with emergency services or for recreational applications – for orientation in open country or on open water – Galileo services can offer a substantial contribution. Beyond that, further possible applications are continuously being developed, designed and tested by Galileo, for example in the banking, finance and insurance and energy sector, for environmental protection and management, as well as for mobile communication.     What does georeferenced mean?

    By the process of georeferencing, a position or location on the Earth is connected to information of the globe (map, grid, postal address) (see also http://de.wikipedia.org).

    What is the SIM card for?

    Similar to a mobile, the SIM card serves as identification of the unit in the telecommunications network. This smart card is put into a MOBIDAT unit, in order to make the data transmission via GSM possible.

    Which telecommunication providers are supported?

    Basically all. In Germany, due to the high network coverage, very good experience was made with T-D1 and Vodafone (D2). In Austria and Switzerland all GPRS capable networks up to now are supported.

    Does the system also work abroad (outside of Germany)?

    Yes. There are also NO roaming costs incurred.

    Can sub-contractors also be integrated into the system?

    By all means. For that the system is designed. Sub-contractors are integrated into the platform. Even the contract is integrated, so that the accounting can be done via the platform.

    Spare parts as well as accessories can be ordered via our Support-Team directly. Please understand, that a written order (e-mail, fax or by post) is necessary, because of the liability and for documentation reasons.

    Why is it not possible to login to the portal?

    1. The login is done by mistake in the predecessor portal http://www.mobidat.com/. For this portal however, other access data is needed, besides it will be switched off after a transition period. The PortalNG can be reached under the URL http://portalng.mobidat.com/. Please note that no “www” characters are to be typed in front of this URL!

    2. A part of the login was not entered correctly. In this case the access data should match the data on the access data documents that were passed on to you. Especially with your password, pay attention to upper and lower case. In the case of a forgotten password, another user with administrator rights can assign a new password, or a new one is requested at MOBIWORX.
